Personal Safety

When you're on the highway and have trouble of any kind follow these steps to ensure your safety until help arrives.

  1. Pull over to the Right side of the road whenever possible.

  2. If you are in the left lane and cannot safely get to the right side slow down and gradually pull to the left.

  3. Turn on your 4 way flashers as soon as possible.

  4. Make to sure to pull over far enough to clear the left driving lane.

  5. Always try to keep 2 wheels on some type of hard surface if safe and possible.

  6. NEVER go towards the highway side and stay away from the back of the vehicle.

  7. If your battery is dead and your flashers don't work REMAIN IN THE VEHICLE and watching traffic behind you, open the door on the highway side SLIGHTLY, enough to put a rag or cloth or napkin at the top of the door and close the door. This will be your Flag to passing motorists to let them know you are in trouble.

  8. Try to remain in the vehicle but if you feel safer outside STAY AWAY FROM THE HIGHWAY SIDE AND REAR of the vehicle.

  9. Only when you are fully stopped, gearshift lever in Park or in gear, Emergency brake set, call for help on your phone. Unless a friend or family member is coming to do the work DO NOT call anyone to come stay with you until help arrives. This would only add one more unnecessary vehicle and more people to an already dangerous situation.
